Frequently Asked Questions about Brackman-Young Company, Inc. our products and services.

bulletQ1: Aren't all replacement windows basically the same?

A1: NO - Windows vary as to thickness, frame structure and size, glass types and is either mechanically fastened together or are welded together.

bulletQ2: Which type of window is the best?

A2: Thickness of vinyl is important for strength and durability. Welded frames and sashes are better because they are more solid than mechanically fastened windows. Glass with "Low E" coating and gas additives in either double or triple layer will dramatically increase the energy efficiency level. Super Peak Performance glass by Thermal Industries has an effective "R" value of 8.13 or four times more efficient than a standard insulated glass.

bulletQ3: Do you lose glass space when installing replacement windows?

A3: YES. The amount of glass loss varies depending upon the width of the frame. When most windows are replaced, only the sashes are removed leaving the existing jamb. When the new replacement window goes in, it has its own jambs and sashes thus reducing the amount of glass in the opening. Thermal Industries makes a narrow line window series where the jambs and sashes are thicker walled and narrower width to compensate and cause less loss of glass space.

bulletQ4: What is the difference between a three and a four-season enclosure?

A4: Typically, a three season room has a 2" or 3" wall thickness with a 3" or 4" roof thickness. Glass windows are typically single-pane and walls are not thermally broken. A four-season room will usually have thermal breaks throughout along with insulated glass. Wall thickness is usually a minimum of 3". Branstrator Incorporated offers both three and four season rooms along with a host of options including wallpaper interiors; Low-E/argon filled glass and welded frame vinyl window sashes.

bulletQ5: Can you really use a four-season room all year?

A5: Depending upon the climate you may have no "down" time in your four-season enclosure. However with an all glass enclosure your efficiency level is not as great as your house walls. Therefore, in extreme cold or heat, your level of comfort may require more energy to maintain.

bulletQ6: How long will my new room enclosure last?

A6: This will vary depending on several factors - quality of product, location of room, level of use or amount of "wear and tear". Most products, if maintained properly, will out-last their warranties. Brackman-Young Company represents the Branstrator line of room enclosures. Branstrator enclosures are backed by the industry's most comprehensive warranties available - 25 years all working parts and 15 years on insulated glass!

bulletQ7: Do vinyl decks get hot in the sun?

A7: Vinyl decks are actually cooler to the touch than wood decks when exposed to the sun.

bulletQ8: Are vinyl decks slick in the winter?

A8: Some are. Thermal Industries' DreamDecks have a "starburst" embossed pattern that provides traction and has a slightly curved back to provide good drainage.

bulletQ9: Are vinyl decks more expensive or about the same as wood?

A9: Vinyl decks do cost more initially, but studies show within a 7 to 10 year period (with the costs associated with upkeep of wood decks) vinyl will pay for itself and continue to provide years of maintenance free enjoyment.
